Workshop with Dániel Kovács
In CI we often talk of the dance as a third thing that comes into being when I meet a partner, another dancing body. As Steve Paxton wrote in a recent article, Contact Improvisation „is not a dance about you, or your partner. It is a dance about its movement.” In this class, I’m interested in ways to take care of the spaces in which dance is born and unfolds its life. How do I make (and keep) the space available for the dance to grow into?
I would like to work with a few different spaces that are important for a dance of CI. The space of the body held by the skin as its boundary. Making the body available in its three-dimensional volume and mass. Clarifying the boundaries of the body as a way to ground the possibility of entering into clear relations in dance.
The space of perception. Making the senses available for entering the „spherical space” of sensations where the dance can unfold. Entering a shared space of perception where communication is immediate.
The space of movement. Taking care that the dance always has a space to move into, so we can dance with safety even as we take risks in exploring the unknown. This exploration is inspired by the work of my dear teachers Urs Stauffer and Nita Little.
